One little word

I finally feel I'm getting into the new year's routine after the whirlwind of the holidays. It takes me a while to just breathe, reset and move forward each January. Do you feel the same?

This year, for the first time, I decided to choose a word that will be my focus for the months ahead. I've never participated in One Little Word but I've always been drawn to the idea. I think that in the past I made it seem too hard...which word to choose, how would I know, would I be happy with just ONE word defining my year?

But I decided this was the year to join in. So many lovely ladies I admire are taking part, and I didn't want to be left behind!

The word that kept returning to my mind was "trust." I tend to be a worrier by nature--and the word trust seems to be one that might counter that tendency. I want to trust more that things will work for the best, that my God is bigger and bolder and more loving than I can imagine, and that whatever comes my way, I will be able to handle it. Sounds big and scary, doesn't it? But it's my hope that focusing on this word will at least begin to draw my mind in this direction.

Endings and beginnings

The last few hours of 2011 are here, and I spent some time today looking back through photos, remembering special events of this year and wondering about what's to come in 2012. I always think I'll make big plans, set lofty goals and jump right in, but life often gets in the way.

Having said that, I do have some creative challenges in mind for next year:

*Get comfortable with Photoshop--I've had the software for a while now but I've never ventured far into the depths of it can do. I'm counting on these classes with Kim Klassen to help me learn and keep me motivated.
*Continue to build online friendships with the inspiring women I met this year at camp (And hopefully attend camp in 2012 if at all possible!)
*Spend time with this amazing lens I got for Christmas.
*Shoot more Polaroids! I was quite remiss in this area in 2011 and need to give my SX-70 more love and attention in 2012.
*Learn more about my new iPhone and all the ways I can be creative with its sweet little camera (I'm already an Instagram junkie!)

So...those are the ideas buzzing around in my head right now. Hopefully I can stay committed and maybe even add more to the list as the year unfolds. How about you? What are your creative goals and dreams?

It's that time of year!

It's December 16--my husband's birthday!--and I am just realizing how close we are to Christmas Day! The days fly by and suddenly the actually holiday is upon us. Sigh.

Though I'm generally very organized, I somehow never find the time (or plan for it) to make more gifts, more decorations, more goodies. I did most of my shopping online this year (thank you, Etsy and Amazon) but even so, the time to do those things that are so enjoyable seems to just disappear.

This weekend is set aside for wrapping and baking; I'm still compiling my list of goodies to make, trying to decide which ones must make the cut. Caramel corn, matzoh crunch, truffle cookies, peanut brittle, Oreo truffles?...the list is really endless.

So I ask: If you could bake or make just one treat this season, what would it be? I'd love to know! (And links to your favorite recipes are always appreciated.)

P.S. Those little treats on the baking sheet are cheddar-pepper palmiers and they are delicious. They're best eaten fresh from the oven. Yum.

Counting blessings

In this month of Thanksgiving, I've been photographing each day something I'm thankful for. It's a good practice and forces me to pause daily to find something, large or small, for which to be grateful.

But it's sometimes hard to translate into words, or pictures, what's really in your heart. Though I've mostly taken photos of things, it's the intangibles that are the true blessings.

I'm so thankful for the way I was raised, for the happy childhood I was given. I'm grateful for my own little family, my husband and children, who mean more to me than they will ever know. I'm thankful for all the undeserved grace I've received, for being loved, for friendships and new adventures.

Though we've had our share of struggles these past few months, it's all just part of living. The endless list of blessings reminds me that life is good!

Here's hoping your list is long as well. Happy Thanksgiving!

Forever sisters

What happens when 70 women converge in one place, hearts open, cameras in hand?

Magic. Pure magic.

That's the only way I know to describe the experience I had this week at the Shutter Sisters camp. We all arrived, not knowing anyone, not knowing what it would be, but just trusting. We believed that whatever happened SHOULD happen--and it was so much more than we ever imagined.

We quickly learned that it wasn't about the equipment, or our technical knowledge, or even our previous experience. It didn't matter who had the most expensive camera or the most impressive portfolio; what mattered was what our eyes could see and how we chose to express our point of view. It was the bonding of kindred spirits, of finding people who "get" you even though you've just met.

In the end, it wasn't even so much about the photos, though they give us a tangible way to remember the magic. It was about having permission to be who we are, to express our wishes and our fears, to know we are beautiful--and we belong.

Countdown

I've been keeping a little secret (sort of) about some upcoming plans. But now my adventure is just five days away so I have to share.

On Sunday I will be winging my way to Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California to join an amazing group of women for the Shutter Sisters camp! I'm one of the lucky ones who was able to sign up for camp last March, and now the time I've been waiting for is almost here.

It's exciting and scary and a little overwhelming, and I expect to be completely blown away by the talented women I will meet. I hope to make new friends, learn new tricks of the trade, and come back with my creativity in high gear. Woo-hoo! I promise to tell you all about it when I return.

We're enjoying the most wonderful Indian Summer, with lots of sunny skies and temps in the 70s and 80s. I cleaned out my small garden yesterday and harvested the last of the tomatoes (the ones the chipmunks didn't get!) but I'm not quite ready to say good-bye to summer. We're seeing hints of fall, though, with lots of golds and greens dotting the landscape, and real change won't be far behind.

With cooler days coming, I'm starting to think about things to make and do:
*This cowl is gorgeous and might be the thing to get me back into knitting.
*It's time to start baking bread again, and this loaf looks delicious.
*I'd like to paint our bedroom a soothing shade of grey.

It's October! Time to give an official welcome to fall (a little late) with a new cookie recipe.

My friend Jan and I got together last week to give these mesquite chocolate chip cookies a try. The recipe is from Heidi Swanson's book, Super Natural Cooking, and calls for an ingredient I hadn't used before: mesquite flour. It wasn't available in my local grocery story, or Whole Foods, or even Trader Joe's. Luckily, we have a Dean & Deluca nearby and they do carry it. (You can also find it online.)

Mesquite flour is gluten-free, though you also use regular flour in the recipe. The texture is similar to that of regular flour, with a golden yellow color and a distinctive scent. The mesquite flour is supposed to give the cookies a smoky flavor, though for me the taste was very subtle. At a cost of $12 a pound it's definitely the most expensive ingredient in these cookies!

My take? The cookies were delicious out of the oven and the next day as well, but maybe not as different as I'd expected or hoped. If you're looking for something new to try, these may be it. But I'm not sure they'll be my everyday, go-to cookies.

New direction

The past month has been full of unexpected ups and downs, taking my family down a path we hadn't planned to travel. We are all fine and things are getting back to a normal rhythm, but I've needed the quiet space and my creative juices have not been flowing.

Now I'm ready for a creative kick-start, and I'm challenging myself to pick up my camera again and to get back in the game. I'm pondering a new project of some kind but I'm not sure what that might be. How do you get back your creative mojo after it's been gone a while? I'd love to hear your ideas and thoughts.

Transition

The sunny skies and warm temperatures say summer is still here, but the school calendar tells a different story. Public schools are back in session, and for the first time ever I wasn't taking a first-day-of-school portrait of my kids.

Tomorrow is a big day for our daughter as we take her off to college to begin her new life as a freshman. Our son--a college senior!--is settled into his new apartment and ready for a big year, too.

There's nothing like seeing your kids grow up to make you realize how quickly time passes. The house is going to seem very quiet for a while as we adjust to this "new normal." I'll shed some tears for sure, but I know it's all good. We are indeed blessed.

Scattered

I'm feeling scattered as a series of changes is looming. It begins today with our son moving from one apartment to another, and culminates in just three short weeks as our daughter moves to the dorm and away from home for the first time.

For me, the lazy days of summer are not so lazy right now. There's so much to do, yet a lot of waiting involved, too (which is not my forte) as events must happen in a particular order. My to-do list is filled with things to buy, things to remember and things to figure out.

Wish me luck as I try to find a little calm in the midst of this whirlwind.

This week marked the official start of summer (also my birthday!) and we've been enjoying every minute of it. This time of year has always been energizing to me, with longer days, more flexible schedules, and delicious fresh foods. I've been riding my bicycle, reading some good books, and looking forward to picking blueberries soon. I got two new cookbooks for my birthday and I'm excited to try incorporating some new foods into our meals.

Wild about Harry

We just returned from a great family vacation to Orlando, where four days of theme parks left us sweaty, tired, and happy. First stop on our list was the new Harry Potter attraction at Universal's Islands of Adventure, and it did not disappoint! We have been avid readers of all the books and it was fun to see the town of Hogsmeade and the Hogwarts castle come to life. We sampled a butterbeer, visited Honeydukes candy shop, and were left breathless by the fabulous ride in the Hogwarts castle. We also enjoyed revisiting some old favorites both at Universal and The Magic Kingdom before returning home ready for non-fried food and cooler days indoors.

Now as we race toward July, I'm playing catch-up and trying to remember all the fun projects I wanted to include in my summer calendar. I want to continue making memories and relishing the warm, sunny days before they all slip through my fingers. What is on your "must-do" list for summer?

All over but the shouting

She did it! Our daughter is now a high school grad, with honors. She finished in the top 17 of her class and we couldn't be more proud. The weekend was fabulous, filled with lots of family, friends, food, photos and activities. We're still eating the last of the treats from the dessert buffet (though I think I should be on a sugar fast at this point in time), and the house is in disarray, but we're all happy. Our summer is officially here and--to steal a phrase from a well-known TV ad-- "We're going to Disney World!"

A few party notes:
*We followed this tutorial for making the mason jar candle holders; we used birdseed to stabilize the candles in the jar.
*I made the cupcakes using the basic white cupcake recipe from Southern Living and topped them with this buttercream frosting--delicious!
*The paper lanterns in the last photo are from Pier 1 and were lit with battery-powered LED lights (also from Pier 1)

Savor

Today I waved good-bye as I watched my daughter drive off to high school for the very last time. Tomorrow morning we all go to the school for a special assembly, where the soon-to-be grads will wear their caps and gowns and will feel--maybe for the first time--that it's all really ending. Tomorrow evening family and friends will gather to celebrate her accomplishments with a party, and Saturday she will officially graduate. It's happy, it's sad, it's all going too fast. We are blessed. Time to savor each moment.

Crunch time

We enjoyed a lovely Easter, and now we're coming into the home stretch of the school year, with graduation just four short weeks away. Announcements are in the mail, the open house invitation will go out later this week...but there is still much to do! I feel I've abandoned all my online contacts recently but it's crunch time and I have to stay focused on the to-do list. It's exciting and a little sad, too, as I think of all the big changes looming ahead.

Soon the days will slow down, and I'm looking forward to the chance to try some new things:

Here and there

A visit to City Market with a good friend last weekend was just what I needed: a mini escape from the 'burbs and the chance to see and taste some different delights. I love the diversity of people, the sounds and smells, the array of fruits, veggies, spices, and fresh-baked goods. Sometimes a 30 minute drive is all you need to feel as if you're in a different city.

I also love that spring seems to have finally arrived. With the warmer weather, I am:

*planting violas
*watching the bunnies frolic in our back yard
*trying new recipes (this one was fabulous!)
*buying herbs to grow for summer meals
*opening windows (despite allergies)
*sipping Vietnamese iced coffee
*making a batch of hard-boiled eggs for snacking

Small things

I've been making a few small things these past weeks...a tiny terrarium, a simple woven bracelet, a little garter stitch blanket for a newborn. Sometimes it's the quick projects like these that get my creative juices flowing and make me feel like I've accomplished something. It's especially true when I have some big things looming and just need something I can complete. Do you ever feel the same way? Share your little projects with me!

P.S. A tutorial for the bracelet can be found here, and the blanket was based on this pattern. If I were making the blanket again, I'd cast on more stitches for a slightly larger size.

Road trip

Spring fever is hitting us, and though we didn't take an exotic spring break vacation, we decided a short road trip would be a fun Friday adventure. We headed to Weston, MO and wandered up and down Main St., I with my camera in hand, mostly pointing up. I love the architecture in older towns and the rooftops are often the most detailed and interesting.

On the other hand, it was the goodies in the window of the last photo that caught my eye. Vintage cameras--lots of them. Oh. My. Goodness.

The story behind the shop was even more fascinating than the cameras and photos it contained. The shop's owner--himself a photographer--is also the grandson of a once-famous celebrity photographer, Orval Hixon. Hixon was active in the Kansas City area in the early 1900s and photographed celebrities and performers who came to town with the vaudeville shows. Hixon's grandson sells prints (from 11" x 14" glass negatives!) of his grandfather's work in the shop, and there are also several local displays that I hope to check out.

Random Monday

We stretched the birthday celebrations over two weekends and now it's all behind us. There was red velvet cake, ice cream cake, pizza, ribs and who know what else (not all at the same meal, of course). It was great fun to commemorate two special days!

Now I turn my attention to the week ahead with its random assortment of activities. Jury duty today, a campus visit to choose a dorm for next year, and preparations for spring break are all on the agenda.

It feels like February just began a couple of days ago, and now we welcome March. Though winter seems long in some ways, at other times the days speed by. My daughter turned 18 over the weekend, a big occasion! And my son will be 21 in just two days. Two milestone birthdays in such a short span of time...it makes my head spin just a bit. Can you believe these two little ones are now adults?

For me, the birthday celebrations each year signal a shift in the seasons, too. I can begin to imagine warmer days, sunny skies, green grass. But with graduation looming and more changes afoot, I think I'll be happy to let time move along at a slower pace...for now.

Hearts a-flutter

In the cold, gray days of winter, it's fun to have a little holiday like Valentine's Day to look forward to. Heart garlands, pink-iced sugar cookies, and a vase of pink and white tulips all bring a little smile to my face.

It's not too late to spread a little love around your house, too. Serve a warm drink, string up a garland or paper chain, or make a special card for someone you love. Have fun, keep it simple, and remember to say "I love you!"

Snowmageddon 2011

So the blizzard came and went, leaving a mountain of snow in its wake. About 10 inches here, I think. I've been relying on ibuprofen to help with all the aches and pains from shoveling. And there's been lots of cooking, too. Last night it was Pioneer Woman's spicy pulled pork--fabulous! Tonight, chicken tortilla soup. I think I've earned the right to eat some hearty meals, given the calories I've surely burned working outside!

Aside from logging some work hours here at home, I've been Web surfing a little more than usual. I just discovered Pinterest (yes, I'm late to the party) and I'm hooked. It is such a smart way to discover new things, new people, and keep a visual bookmark of everything you love. If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend it!

I have to remind myself that it's February now, which means I need to liven things up around here with some Valentine's Day decor. Making plans

It's a frigid January morning--about six degrees, I think--and another snow day here. I've had one cup of coffee and I'm waiting for a little daylight before I venture outdoors to clear off the patio another time. The house is peaceful and quiet, only the hum of the furnace breaking the silence. It's wonderful!

So we're solidly into the new year and I'm pondering what creative creative projects I should tackle. I have thoughts swirling in my head but nothing has firmed up yet. One project on my plate is to create a photo scrapbook for my girl who's graduating in just four months! I've slowly started gathering photos, but since she grew up in a (mostly) pre-digital age, there are lots of prints to be scanned. I made one for her brother on Shutterfly but I'm wondering if there are better options now. Any thoughts?

I keep looking at all the cozy handknits online and need to get something back onto my needles. This is especially lovely, don't you think? I like this one, too.

I also hope to just spend more time with my camera this year, maybe trying out some film cameras we have acquired and perhaps even building a contraption so I can try my hand at TtV. Have any of you done this? If so, please share any tips or tricks that might be helpful.

So December has been a wild ride and there's no end in sight--yet. The short days have me reaching for my pjs as soon as the supper dishes are cleared away, but the to-do list keeps calling my name. The list of things not yet done is overwhelming, so it's best to focus on what IS done.

*Cards have been sent and the decorations are up
*My two hand-knit gifts are off the needles (photos to come...maybe)
*I baked a fabulous cake to share with friends
*I bought gifts from these Etsy sellers
*I have a batch of dough for these cookies waiting in the fridge (great for gifting)
*I've spent time with girlfriends, eating and laughing and just catching up

Later today our son will come home for winter break, and we will also celebrate my husband's birthday. Next week we'll travel to see family and spend Christmas together. It's wild and crazy but fabulous, too, and I remind myself to always look at the blessings in the midst of the chaos; I hope you can do the same. If I'm not back in this space again soon, I wish joy and peace for each of you as the year comes to a close!

Kicking off the holidays

The holiday season has officially arrived, now that we've said good-bye to Thanksgiving and November is at an end. Today the first snowflakes are flying here, and tomorrow we turn the calendar to the last month of the year.

Fall-y

Fall color finally arrived in our part of the country, and not a minute too soon! This weekend I saw lots of Christmas greenery appearing on houses, lamp posts and trees around town, almost hidden in some cases by the surrounding foliage still clinging to the trees. The maple in my back yard is hanging onto its leaves, though I did mow--yes, mow--a lot of leaves this morning with my mulching mower. We'd hoped the leaves would fall this weekend so we could get them mulched and bagged while temps were in the 60s, but the tree wouldn't cooperate. I felt it was mocking me today by raining more leaves down on me while I worked to get the first batch mulched!

So it's Thanksgiving week, and as usual, I don't feel ready. To clarify, I'm not ready for what comes after this week...the onslaught of gift buying and preparation for Christmas that always leaves me exhausted. My lists get longer and more detailed, and I take great pleasure in checking items off when finished.

But before we get to Christmas, we really should enjoy Thanksgiving. I mean, really, who doesn't love a holiday devoted to delicious food? We'll be traveling a couple of hours away to share a meal with my parents and in-laws. I'll be bringing a pumpkin cheesecake, cloverleaf rolls, and this yummy Nantucket cranberry pie. How about you? What foods or activities are you most looking forward to this week?

I'm a person who likes to be organized, and clutter is not my friend. My home isn't always spotless, but I do try to minimize the mess. And I'm always on the lookout for fun, affordable containers that help me keep things tidy.

Flying by

I am shocked at how quickly October has come and (almost) gone. How can today be Halloween? As all Moms know, the end of October brings the looming holidays that much closer. And as much as I've thought about gifts to buy or make, I haven't put any of my plans into action. Ack! I have yarn and knitting needles patiently waiting for me, and an Amazon list full of ideas. I always love to bake gifts, too, but that usually happens at the last minute.

On top of all this, I'm seriously thinking of opening an etsy shop with prints of my photos for sale. I have a Polaroid calendar in the works as well that I'm really excited about. And possibly notecards, too! It's all the little details of getting a shop open that are slowing me down now.

Creative collaboration

My friend Jan is one of the most fun and creative people you'll ever meet. In fact, her official title is "Creative Instigator," and one of her greatest gifts is being a cheerleader for those of us venturing into the creative waters.

A couple of years ago, Jan asked me to photograph a selection of props that she uses in her presentations about creativity. Remembering

I love antiquing. There's something so intereseting about looking at things from the past, wondering who owned them, how they were used. And something a little sad, too, seeing treasured items on display for strangers to buy.

Looking at the photographs always makes me wonder about the people in them, their lives, and how those photos have ended up on a cluttered table instead of safely tucked away in a relative's home. They remind me, too, of how things change, how things that were once useful are obsolete, how quickly time passes by.

Maybe that's why I love photography; it lets me capture moments in time, things I might otherwise forget, documenting what is important to me today. Perhaps someone 100 years from now will look through my photos and wonder about my life, who I was and the things I loved. I wonder...

Loving the light

I realize as I look through recent photos that the light is changing. The changes are subtle, but they're there. Though I love fall, there's a certain bittersweet feeling to the season, knowing that winter will come sweeping in behind it with its biting winds. Right now we still have many days with temps reminiscent of summer, but the mornings are cooler and the days are definitely shorter. For now, I'll keep seeking the light, watching the shift, enjoying the particular fruits of this season.

It's been ages since I shot and developed film; though it's fun, it does take extra effort to purchase and process, plus it's more costly than my trusty digital.

That said, there's something magical about taking photos you can't immediately see and waiting to discover how they turned out. This roll of film was in my Holga since last fall and I just now got around to finishing it. As usual, only a few of the shots turned out as I'd hoped, but that's O.K. A lot of the fun is in the process itself.

So for those of you who shoot with film, what are your favorite film types? Anything new I should consider or try? I keep thinking I need to load up the trusty Pentax or Minolta and give them a spin soon. The Holga and SX-70 shouldn't have all the fun, right?

August adventures

It's been hot, hot, hot here...and incredibly humid, too. The daily heat index for nearly two weeks has been between 105 and 110 degrees. The grass is crunchy underfoot and the flower bed in front of the house has huge cracks in it. I always forget that this is what August in the Midwest looks like.

Though our AC works just fine, we've had some major construction going on here that's been bringing the outdoors in. We're having all the windows in our home replaced--long overdue--and blasts of heat have been pouring through those openings on a daily basis. All the windows are now in place so things are looking up!

Aside from the repairs going on, we're getting ready for the start of school again. Every year I'm surprised by how quickly the summer has flown by. We'll be moving our son back to college this weekend and our daughter will be starting her senior year...gulp! It's a busy time for all of us. What are you doing to wrap up the summer? Is it all work, or some fun stuff, too?

Back to real life

I can't believe it's the end of July and summer is coming to a close! (It makes me sad just to write that down.) We are back from our vacation, tired and happy, getting back into the work routine this week. Things still feel a bit disjointed as more changes will be coming with the start of school in just three weeks. That doesn't seem possible. Neither does the fact that my daughter will be a senior this year. It hit me as I was filling out the paperwork for her diploma just a couple of days ago...this is really it!

As for me, I'm feeling like now is the time to be thinking about the second half of the year (I know, we're already into it!) and what I want to accomplish. Daily life seems to get in the way to the loftier goals. I need to find the discipline to keep my focus and make some things happen, in spite of the distractions. Do you feel that way, too? How do you work your dreams into everyday life?

Here and there

I seem to be all over the place these days--literally and figuratively. A couple of trips already, vacation just days away, and a to-do list that's much too long. I am a summer-loving girl, but one thing I miss in the summertime is my routine. One difference this year is that I'm working again part-time, which adds another level of responsibility into the mix. My head is just a little too full right now. It's all good, though. I need to do a better job of remembering that.

Sweet, sweet summer

Now that we've moved into July it feels like summer is slipping by all too quickly. Something about flipping that page on the calendar makes me realize how fast the days are flying by. I'm loving the colors, sights and sounds of these days and need to do a better job capturing them. I plan to take one picture a day during the month of July to make myself do a better job of noticing what's around me. What says summer to you? And what are you doing to hold those memories close?

Summer is in full swing but it's one of the soggiest ever! We've had some major "gully-washers" in the past couple of weeks and I'm not sure when we'll ever dry out. We do have moments of sun in between the storms, but not enough to really make a difference. It seems the rain makes some people (and plants) happy, though, so I guess your fun is where you make it!

P.S. Rainy days are good days for cooking and baking! I recently made these cinnamon rolls (delicious!) and the cowboy calzones from The Pioneer Woman's cook book. And if you don't own that cook book...you need to run straight out and get it. Seriously.

It's official

Summer is here! Well, not technically, but it's the last day of school for my daughter, and that marks a big change for our family. No more homework, tests,or projects for several months. Now we can focus on the fun stuff!

As for me, I'm working fewer hours and more of those from home, so I think the new routine will fit the summer mode. The job has definitely cut into my blogging and photography time, but I'm hoping to get a better balance in the next few months.

Right now, I'm looking forward to:
*Picking blueberries
*Visiting family
*Vacationing here
*Drinking lots of sweet tea
*Enjoying the fresh goodies from my garden

I finally believe that spring is here. I have proof! Walking around my yard last night, there was no doubt that changes are happening. It's always hard for me to hope, at first, for the warm weather, the blooms, the birdsong. On our first "official" day of spring, we had six inches of snow! Such a cruel beginning to the season.

But now it's unfolding right in front of me. The snow shovel is back on its peg in the garage, and the lawnmower will soon be pressed into service. Ahhh...spring. Bring it on!

I love the combination of Polaroid film and flowers. When I saw these ranunculus blooms at my local grocery store, I couldn't snatch them up quickly enough. We've had so many gray days, though, that finding the right light was tricky. I'm pretty happy with these shots, but I'd like to try again on a bright, sunny day. This film definitely loves light. Searching for color

Since gray skies have been dominating the landscape, I played along this week with Kristin's "For the LOVE OF COLOR" group on flickr to chase away the gloom. It was a great way to bring some zing back into my days (and my photos). Looking at the weather forecast--seven days of clouds and rain--I think I better keep up the search. Mother Nature is taking her time unfolding her spring and summer color palette!

It's birthday week here! My daughter celebrated her 17th on Friday, and my son will turn 20 tomorrow. Crazy, huh? Just like all moms (and dads), I have a hard time remembering where the time went. Wasn't it just yesterday that we were giving baths, reading bedtime stories, leaving teeth under the pillow for the tooth fairy? And what about all those soccer games, concerts, and music lessons?

These milestones remind me that life moves too quickly. All those little, daily things? The tiny moments, the small victories? Those are where the real living is. And I don't intend to miss an minute of it!

Sharing the love

My crafting, baking and photography time have taken a big hit as I've recently gone back to work on a temporary contract. I'm trying to balance my new responsibilities with those that remain at home, plus still work in some fun things here and there.

I did manage to finish my donation for Craft Hope's Red Scarf project and got it in the mail this week ahead of the deadline. I was really pleased with how it turned out, given the simplicity of the knit. I used two skeins of Berroco Peruvia Quick for the scarf, casting on 20 stitches and just using a simple moss stitch. It caught my dad's eye this weekend when they were here for a visit, and now I plan to make one in blue for him.

My other recent endeavor was creating Valentine postcards using a couple of images I shot last year. The card you see on the scarf is one of them. Thanks to my friend, Jan, who asked if I'd print Valentine cards for her, I actually got my act together and made it happen this year! Maybe next year I'll plan ahead enough to consider selling some online as well. Starting an online shop is an idea I keep toying with, but haven't been sure about implementing. Perhaps that's a goal for the second half of 2010...what do you think?

Busy hands

January is nearly gone and my poor camera has been left sitting alone more often than not. After finishing my 365 project I felt the need for a little break, a change in the way I spend my creative time. It's been refreshing to make some things with my hands; it's been far too long since I've done that. I've completed a knitting project and have another in the works to donate to a great cause. I made cloverleaf rolls for the first time ever--seriously good! And I even spent time making a special birthday card (using this tutorial), something I used to do all the time.

I must say, it feels good to start off the new year with some new projects. I'm having a blast! What creative endeavors are bringing you joy right now?

Glancing back

Christmas has come and gone, but I wanted to share with you what I gave for gifts. Having spent so much time with my camera last year, it seemed fitting to give some of the resulting images to family and friends. I'd been wanting to have some cards printed and some photos framed, so it seemed the right time to do both.

I chose four images for my postcard set and had them printed here. I was very happy with the results! Nice thick cards, blank on the back for jotting a quick thank-you note or other correspondence. My only regret was not printing my name somewhere on the cards; next time I'll spring for the extra dollars to do so.

Selecting shots for framing was a bit trickier. After honing the list to about two dozen images, my husband and I chose what we thought would appeal to each person on our list. Most were digital images, though a couple of my Polaroids made the cut. Opting for non-traditional "framing," I had prints made here and then ordered maple blanks from the folks at Plywerk. The final result was just what I'd hoped for. In fact, it was a little hard to give them all away! My to-do list for 2010 now includes making a set for myself.

Anything but normal

The view outside my window these days is white. Very white. The snow that gave us a lovely Christmas refuses to leave, and has been topped every few days by new powder. Normally the snow lasts only a few days around here, melting quickly a day or two after the storm. Things are definitely not normal right now!

In addition to the mounds of snow, we have sub-zero wind chills, and public schools have been canceled three days running. I've been busy making warm, comforting meals, shoveling the driveway and patio, and spending lots of time with the family. We're still in holiday mode it seems, at least until next week. I guess those plans for organizing and starting new projects will have to wait just a little longer. Any ideas for keeping cabin fever at bay?

Reflecting

I made it! My 365 photo project is complete--all wrapped up, nice and tidy--and I'm pretty pleased. Is every photo perfect? Not even close. But I learned to accept what I was able to do each day, and move on to the next. The process was just as important as the product, maybe even more so, because I learned and improved over time. And those daily photos spark memories for me--events, people, and just ordinary moments of life. I've never been able to keep a written journal, but this collection of images is my journal for 2009.

What's next? I'm not sure, but I know my camera will remain a constant companion. It will be fun to see what lies ahead, don't you think? Here's to a new adventure for all of us in 2010.

The gifts are wrapped and under the tree. The errands are done. We'll be packing today for travel tomorrow. It's so nice to be relaxed and just enjoying time at home! The last few days have been spent baking treats to enjoy over the next few days. No new recipes this year, just a few old favorites. Counting down

Oh, my. One look at the calendar and my heart starts to beat a little faster. How can it be that Christmas is just eight days away? I've made tons of progress yet I never feel completely ready. Does that happen to you?

Starting this weekend it will be time to wrap all the gifts, do some serious baking, and prepare to travel. It will all come together--it always does--but time just seems to speed up during the holiday season. My biggest regret is not making more time for crafting. Sigh. Maybe after Christmas I'll choose a project and devote some time to it.

By the way, I have just 15 days left in my 365 project. Woo-hoo! I'm thinking hard about how to wrap it up. Any ideas for a big finish photo?

Just popping in to share some images from the week. I've been hauling out the holly (so to speak) and I think I'm about finished with the decorating. Time to move on to gifts! I need to order prints of some photos, do a little online shopping, and generally organize my plan for gift-giving. We're trying to scale back a bit but still give something meaningful to our family members. Can you relate? I'm also on the hunt for cookie recipes. Sparkle all the way

So here we are--the first day of the last month of 2009. It always amazes me how fast the year flies by. Today was sunny and balmy, not at all like the winter days that lie ahead. It's time for me to start digging out the decorations, to set up the tree, to adorn the mantle with the fresh greens I bought today. The Christmas lights have sprung up all around town, bringing some sparkle to the dark evenings.

The holidays certainly make the transition to winter a little easier, don't you think? The brightly-colored wrappings, the warm cookies fresh from the oven, the special ornaments that we enjoy for just a short time each year. All such simple pleasures. What are the traditions that mean the most to you?

Gearing up and giving thanks

So Thanksgiving week is here and there's no denying that the holiday busyness is upon us. I'm hosting my family for the Thanksgiving meal and I've been busy in the kitchen already. Two loaves of pumpkin bread, one loaf of banana bread, one pumpkin cheesecake, and one flourless chocolate cake are now safely tucked away in my freezer. Whew! The turkey is thawing in the fridge, sweet potatoes and Yukon golds are in the pantry, and fresh green beans are chilling in the crisper. Wow, what a lot of food! I'm counting on getting at least two meals from the feast, so it seems good to prepare a lot.

My mind is also busy with the thought of Christmas presents. I'm trying to simplify this year, turning my photos into gifts, and making donations to charities like this one. I love shopping on Etsy, too, with so many great artists and affordable options. Something like this would be fun to give to family or friends.

In the midst of all this, I remind myself that the food and gifts don't matter nearly as much as the people for whom they're intended. I'm so grateful for my husband, children, parents, siblings, and close friends! They are what make my life full, give me a reason to smile, and keep me lifted up. They are life's real blessings, and for them I am truly thankful.

Goodbye, hello

Today signals a fresh start as a new month stretches before me. I can't believe October is gone! A whirlwind of change, with blustery days and bursts of color everywhere. And pumpkins, lots of pumpkins. Pumpkin patches, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies. Baked and carved, all behind me. The jack-o-lantern will soon shrivel, the leftover candy will be consumed. So what's ahead?

Right now I'm thinking about the holidays and how we can simplify. The ideas behind the Advent Conspiracy are compelling to me: spending less on gifts, more time with family, giving to those in need. I'm working on ideas to make this happen. I have some plans, but haven't finalized them all. Have you been thinking about this, too? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Let's share ideas so we can all enjoy the time more.

Gloomy days and baking

Fall is definitely here, and warm, sunny days are keeping company with gloomy, rainy ones. The gray days have me thinking--not too happily--about winter, but I find baking can usually lift my spirits. After seeing Heather's post yesterday, I knew I had to give these peanut butter cookies a try.

I actually made two batches of these flourless cookies, not being too happy with the appearance of the first one. I used natural peanut butter and dark brown sugar the first time around, and the texture and color just weren't very appealing. After switching to my usual peanut butter and light brown sugar, the result was much better.

These cookies are delicious and would be perfect for anyone with gluten allergies. If you try them, pop on over to Heather's blog and tell her "thank you" for an easy, delicious recipe!

We saw the sun today for the first time in almost a week. The cheery rays and warmer air called me outside, and I wasn't disappointed.

I always forget how much autumn has to offer; the blooms of spring and summer are showy and bright, but fall color has a magic all its own. Even the drying and dying plants have a certain allure. Seed pods and skeletons of the formerly vibrant growth grace the landscape, less noticeable, but no less lovely.

Mother Nature is preparing for winter, and she does it in style. Don't miss the show!

Baking therapy

This has been an unusual week for me. It started with getting braces--yes,braces--on Monday, followed by the extraction of two teeth on Wednesday. Needless to say, I've been just a little focused on my mouth, though not too interested in eating. Tapioca pudding, soup, smoothies, and protein drinks have been my staples this week. Even so, today I felt good enough to venture into the kitchen for a little baking.

Pumpkin bread is a fall favorite, such a treat for breakfast or even dessert. This recipe is one my mom used when I was growing up, and I've been relying on it ever since. If you give it a try, let me know!

Beat in large mixing bowl:
4 eggs
3 cups sugar
1 cup canola oil
2 cups canned pumpkin
Add:
3 1/3 cups flour
2 t. baking soda
1 1/2 t. salt
1 t. nutmeg
1 t. cinnamon
2/3 cup water
chopped pecans (optional)

Mix well at slow to medium mixer speed. Pour batter into two greased loaf pans (9 x 5) and top with pecans if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 to 90 minutes.

In for a penny, in for a pound

Baking is one of my favorite pasttimes, primarily because I have a sweet tooth and love to satisfy it. I'm always on the hunt for new recipes, and when I saw this one I knew I'd have to give it a try.

This cake is so simple, yet brilliant--the Nutella is the perfect foil for the buttery pound cake. I normally want some type of frosting on my cakes, yet the chocolate filling more than makes up for the lack of a sugary coating on top. (Did I mention there's an entire jar of Nutella in this cake?) Be sure to have a tall glass of milk standing by before digging in. Trust me. You won't need anything more.

Last 100 days

Just popping in to say "hi" today and to share some images of what I'm seeing these days. Life is moving along at its normal fast pace, a few ups and downs but mostly good right now. I'm in the mood to do some closet cleaning and fall decorating, but allergies and an ongoing sinus headache have kept my motivation low. Every time I think about starting a project, I just feel too tired to even begin. Oh, and add to that a broken toe (I missed a few stairs over the weekend) and I'm really moving slowly at the moment. I'm starting to feel a little shut in and I'm reminded that winter will soon be here. Time to get outside and enjoy these perfect days before it's too late! What are you seeing and doing right now?

Caramel and apples and cake, oh, my!

Things are feeling different around here since we turned the calendar to September. We've had lots of cool, cloudy days, and I believe summer is letting go more quickly than usual.

When the seasons change, my food cravings seem to change, too. I'm starting to long for hot soup and cozy comfort foods. And I've been baking a lot, too--not that I restrict that activity to particular times of the year!

Last week I tried a new recipe (two, actually) that are worth sharing. Since it's apple season, it seemed the right time to pull out a recipe I've had tucked away for some time.

Credit for the cinnamon apple cake recipe goes to Leslie Friend, who posted it on her blog a couple of years ago. I have no idea why I waited so long to bake this. It was easy to make and absolutely delicious! You probably have the ingredients in your kitchen right now. If not, it's worth traveling to the store so you can have this tonight.

My addition was the caramel sauce. Caramel and apples make a good pair, right? I found a recipe online and whipped up a batch as the cake was baking. We drizzled it over each slice as it was served, and it was heavenly! Leftovers--if you have any--would be great on ice cream or as a dip for some fresh apples.

This bright red leaf caught my eye yesterday, a standout in the sea of still-green leaves on the maple tree in front of my house. And it caught me by surprise.

The overlap of seasons, the movement from summer to fall--it's happening. Ready or not, the breezes are cooler, the light is shifting, the mood is changing. Can you feel it?

Bright spots

It's a cloudy, gloomy week but there are bright spots in the midst of it all. Both of my kids start school this week--high school and college--and a new household rhythm begins. Even with all the hubbub surrounding the new school year, there's a certain peace in establishing a new routine.

Another huge change for us is the start of a new job for my husband. After nearly five months of unemployment, he's landed a great job and is getting back to his routine, too. I'm proud of all his hard work in making this happen, and I know his new employer is very lucky to have him!

And that leaves me, holding down the fort with our little dog, Max. What's next for me, I don't know. I feel that some changes may be on my horizon, too, but I'm not sure what they are. For now, I'll work hard to care for my family and to play catch-up on all that needs to be done around home.

Dog days of summer

I can't believe we're well into August and I haven't stopped by this space to say "hi." Life has been a little chaotic and time has been slipping through my fingers.

One thing keeping us busy is our sweet Westie, Max. He's had a rough go of it this week after injuring himself while we were away from home one afternoon. The vet thinks he may have a slipped or bulging disk in his neck that's causing some loss of function in his hind leg, so he's on a couple of meds to reduce swelling and relieve pain. He's getting plenty of attention since we have to carry him up and down stairs, as well as outdoors when he needs to go. We're keeping our fingers crossed for a complete recovery, but it's a waiting game at this point.

We've also been on the road quite a bit, moving our son back to college and attending to some family matters. We have one more quick trip this week and then I'm hoping to stay put for a while. Summer continues in full force and I'm holding onto it, despite the fact that school begins in a week. There are still plenty of blooms to pick, fruits and veggies to savor, and sunny days to enjoy. I hope you're loving it all as much as I am!

Peachy

The local peaches are ripe for the picking, and boy, are they amazing! As usual, my eyes were bigger than my pocketbook, and I ended up spending quite a bundle for a little less than a bushel. Somehow, though, it seems O.K. to splurge on something so healthy and delicious, especially in peak season. And have you ever seen a peach the size of a grapefruit? Reminds me of this story. Entirely enchanting!

Slow down, you move too fast

My kids will be going back to school in a few short weeks. How is that possible? I want time to stop right here so we can hold on to summer. I'm not ready for the laid back days to end yet. I just want to keep singing this song.

If you visit here often, you know that my list of knitting projects has slowly dwindled away this year. I blame my 365 project and inreasing time spent online for the decline in my knitting time. (My apologies to those of you who come here for knitting inspiration!) Even so, I finally finished a project I started many months ago for the newest member of our family.

It all started with ten skeins of superwash wool and the basic log cabin "recipe" from this book. After that, it was just knit, knit, knit until the yarn ran out. Nothing tricky here, but I did become bored with the process after the initial burst of creative energy.

Last week I decided it was do-or-die time and I made this project a priority. Today it's winging its way to the East coast to my new little great-niece--now two months old. I'd hoped it would greet her upon her arrival in this world, but I think she's still small enough to snuggle in its warmth when cooler days come calling.

It's the berries!

So what do you do with 12 pounds of blueberries once you've picked them? Well, you eat some out of hand, or in a bowl with milk and sugar, and stash bags full of them in the freezer. And of course, if you're me, you bake.

Muffins were first into my oven, but disappeared before I could document them. Next was this cobbler, with a very dense cake-like topping and lots of juicy blueberries underneath. A little vanilla ice cream on top was the perfect finishing touch.

Then it was back to breakfast with scones. This was a new recipe by Molly, and it was a winner. These were just slightly sweet, a little crunchy on the outside and very tender and moist inside. I'll definitely be adding this recipe to my file.

My blueberry supply has certainly taken a hit this week, but it's been well worth it. I may have just enough left, though, to give this a try. What do you think?

Halfway home

This week marks the halfway point in my 365 project. Which also means that the first half of 2009 is now history. Hard to believe, isn't it? In another six months the photos I'll be taking will be very different.

Ripe for the picking

Picking blueberries is one of summer's simple pleasures for me. Last year my timing was off and I was disappointed to find bushes already picked clean or laden with unripened fruit. This summer I was determined to come home from The Berry Patch with enough to fill our bellies and our freezer.

I think I met my goal! Twelve pound of berries, ready to eat. I made a batch of muffins as soon as I got home from picking, and now I'm dreaming of cobbler or perhaps a sour cream blueberry pie. Mmm, the posssiblities are endless. What's your favorite way to enjoy this summer fruit?

Snacking satisfaction

Most weekends I find myself in the kitchen searching for something to satisfy my sweet tooth. Even in the heat of summer I can be enticed to fire up the oven and put a new recipe through its paces.

When I saw these chocolate goodies last week, I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd be collecting the ingredients and whipping up a batch myself.

Turns out I had most everything I needed in my pantry and refrigerator. I used Ghiradelli bittersweet chocolate chips and plain non-fat yogurt. The batter came together very easily and was thick and chocolatey. These were perfectly done after just 20 minutes in my oven, and moved quickly from the cooling rack to our tummies. I didn't have the whipped cream that was suggested so we settled for a dusting of powdered sugar. A very satisfying snack indeed!

Keeping my cool

I always love frozen treats--ice cream, gelato, sorbet--but when warm weather hits, I really crave them. So when I saw this recipe, I just had to haul out the ice cream maker and give it a try.

This recipe is truly a winner if you're a chocoholic like me. The chocolate flavor is very intense, so be sure to use chocolate and cocoa you love. And since it's a sorbet, you can serve it to your friends or family members who don't eat dairy. I haven't run the numbers on fat and calories, but I'm thinking this is a more figure-friendly treat than ice cream.

My only advice is to make this in advance, transfer the sorbet to a shallow container, and freeze overnight if you want to be able to scoop it. Otherwise, just ladle it into your bowl and dig in! You won't be sorry.
